Prepping Your Engine

The extent to which your engine should be prepared depends completely on your performance objectives.  No factory engine produced today is ready for 20psi of boost in stock form.  On the other hand, almost all can handle upwards of 10psi.  To prepare your engine for nominal boost levels only a few guidelines exist.

1- Engine Condition:

Combustion chamber seal is by far the most important aspect of your engines overall condition. Following close behind is the condition of crank bearings and oil control ring wear.  Crank bearings and oil control ring wear can be determined simply by nothing more than being sure your engine does not rattle or knock, and does not consume excessive amounts of oil.  Factory oil pressure should also be maintained at all times. Two methods can be used to check the overall chamber seal. #1 is a simple compression test,  be sure the engine is within factory requirements.  #2 is a cylinder leak down test.  Every person/shop has opinions on where these numbers should be to ensure proper seal.  A good rule of thumb is as follows:

compression

97-100%- Perfect

92-96%- Good

89-91%- Ok but may have issues

88-or less%- FIX IT!

2- Compression Ratio:

The compression ratio in a supercharged engine affects both performance and drive ability.  Throttle response, fuel economy, hp per psi of boost, and fuel octane requirements are some aspects directly effected.  Careful attention should be paid in this area.  For the best guidelines on where to keep your compression ratio for your application,  contact Thomson Superchargers.

3-Electronic Check:

Be sure all electronics, including, charging system, battery, plug wires, and all related components are in proper working order. If you are running our BEFI system be sure the charging system components are rated properly for a fuel injected application.

4- Other Components:

Increasing power output means increasing power transfer.  Be sure all drive and chassis components are up for the task. Again, these are guidelines for introducing nominal boost levels to a stock or close to stock application.  Many more factors come into play as you increase boost output.  Thomson Superchargers will assist you with any build, be it stock or top fuel.  We will be happy to guide you in the right direction to create the power you need.
